The youth of today will be tomorrow’s teachers, government officials, property owners, and environmentally aware adults. Why not get them involved now and cultivate their desire to gain knowledge and understanding in the natural world around them?
This event is a scholastic competition for high school-aged students, which tests their knowledge in five topics: soils, aquatics, forestry, wildlife, and current environmental issues. Teams that win at the regional level then go on to state, which then determines which team will represent New York in the National Envirothon. This event is not limited to just those at the high schools. We encourage home school groups and BOCES to get involved as well. Each team needs a team advisor and this doesn’t have to be limited to the science teachers! If you teach Home Economics, Math, Gym, Music, you’re a coach, or just an individual who likes to be involved and have an interest in natural resources, then by all means, get a team together!
Transportation to the event will be the responsibility of each participating team. If your school or group does not have the funding to support a team’s participation, we encourage you to fill out an application for grant funding (Due April 6, 2018). This grant is based on a reimbursable agreement, meaning teams must attend the event in order to receive funding.
Please contact your local Soil & Water Conservation District office for more information about registering a team or any other questions you may have about this great event.
